Start of Lent 2020

On February 26, it will mark the beginning of Lent 2020, and for 40 days Christians will be meditating daily on the event of the cross.

Let’s ask ourselves during this period: Do I know the meaning of the cross?

Modern philosophy and even theology may dilute and downplay the sinfulness of man that caused Jesus to walk the path of the cross, making us shallow in our understanding of how much the Lord sacrificed in order to embrace our sinfulness. ‘Isn’t it easy since he is the Son of God?’ The Jesus that was portrayed in the Bible is far from ‘easy’, but before being captured and made to walk the path of the cross, the Lord revealed great distress in the garden of Gethsemane:

Mt 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Mt 26:38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.

As Apostle Peter’s sermon outlined to the Jews in his famous sermon at Pentecost:

Ac 3:15 You killed the author of life…

We too should realize why Jesus died. It is not that he should die, but for my sins, he chose to die and pay for my mistake, my sin.

Let us meditate again this year the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for us, and realize even more than before, the gravity of his love for us.
